On Saturday, April 9, 2022, at the Miami Seaquarium, a dolphin launched an attack that was recorded on video. During the Flipper performance in front of a family and small child crowd. Sundance, one of the dolphins, went wild, abandoning his act and becoming angry with a trainer. Shannon Carpenter, a photographer, was present with his family when the terrifying incident occurred. He recorded the video and uploaded it on TikTok. When the trainer was eventually able to swim to the pier, clearly rattled but alive, the crowd exhaled a sigh of relief. The trainer was transferred to a nearby hospital by ambulance, but this is only the latest in a series of occurrences at the Seaquarium that the USDA is investigating. Despite the fact that it was recently sold and is now run by new owners, the Mexican-based Dolphin business, many of the same trainers, vets, and personnel remain on the payroll. The USDA issued a damning 17-page report in June, citing multiple significant animal welfare breaches at the Seaquarium, including feeding bad seafood to animals, dolphins dying, and a collapsing tank where Lolita the orca had resided for 25 years.
