On Monday, January 24, 2022, Leonardo Gil Fraga, a TikTok celebrity and hospital worker, was killed in a hit-and-run after leaving the hospital on his motorcycle. The involved driver still must be found, and his family is demanding justice. A Florida hospital worker with over 100,000 TikTok followers was killed in a hit-and-run vehicle accident while ending his shift at Hialeah Hospital. Around 9:30 p.m., the 34-year-old man was riding his motorcycle home when he was hit by an SUV turning left at the crossing of East 8th Avenue and 21st Street in Hialeah. The car drove away from the incident, leaving the TikTok celebrity on the road. Gil’s aunt informed reporters in Miami that he was resting on the side of the street until a passing motorist noticed him and assisted him. He was finally sent to Jackson Memorial Hospital. However, people verified that Gil died because of his injuries. The SUV car that hit Gil is still on the loose, causing the entire family to seek for everyone’s assistance in identifying the suspect’s identity. However, Hialeah Police Lt. Eduardo Rodriguez explained that the CCTV evidence proved that the SUV driver did not give the TikTok celebrity a chance to stop at the intersection. The SUV driver might face significant charges shortly since Gil had the right of way. The family was broken even more after seeing the video, because Gil had never owned a motorbike until three months ago. The driver who fled the scene of the incident is still being sought by police. Lieutenant Rodriguez has appealed to the community for assistance.

As a Miami resident and wife of an avid cyclist, the news of the recent tragedy on Key Biscayne was devastating.

There was an awesome turnout yesterday morning where cyclists met for a group ride in honor of 37 year old Aaron Cohen, the fatal victim of a hit and run accident last week. The riders went along the William Powell Bridge where Aaron and Enda Walsh were hit by a female automobile driver who fled the scene and later turned herself in.

As an accident lawyer in Miami it is truly amazing to see the support and respect that these riders have displayed not only for the injured, but for the sport on a whole. The facebook pages of local bicycle team have been filled with deep rooted thoughts and prayers for all involved. What is more surprising are the posts that show the great respect that these riders have for their beloved sport. Not deterred by fear, there is a momentum to keep riding.

The accident occurred on Sunday night when the victim , who was riding his bicycle, was bit by a motor vehicle that failed to stop after the accident. Coming in first in a bicycle race is usually a cause for celebration. However, it’s not a win for Florida, which ranks first in the nation in fatal bicycle crashes, according to local news station NBC.

Florida has finished in the top three states in the U.S. with the most bicycle collisions for several years in a row. Between 2008 and 2010, 644 bicycle accidents occurred in southwest Florida alone. According to the article, the crashes average about one accident every 34 hours. In 17 of those accidents, the bicyclist loses their life.

In response to these distressing statistics, cities and counties throughout Florida began creating and implementing design plans to provide bike lanes and other amenities to make the streets safer for bicyclists. For example, in 2006, Fort Myers made a plan to add bike lanes and sidewalks to several of its city streets. However, five years later, the Fort Myers plan is only 13 percent complete. According to Fort Myers’ chief engineer, the city has not been able to find the money to revamp its streets in the face of the recent economic downturn.

Many bicyclists suffer injuries in Florida bicycle accidents when motorists fail to safely share the road with them. Drivers can help protect bicyclists by carefully watching for bicycles and slowing down or moving over in their lane to give bicyclists more room to maneuver. Meanwhile, bicyclists can make themselves more visible by placing lights on their bikes and wearing reflective clothing, including a reflective helmet.
